Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing and to keep your tattoo looking vibrant. Please follow these instructions carefully.
1. Immediate Care (First Few Hours)
• Leave the Bandage On: Keep the Saniderm bandage on for at least 24-48 hours. This helps protect your tattoo from bacteria and irritation.
2. Removing the Saniderm Bandage
• Timing: After 24-48 hours, it’s time to remove the bandage.
• How to Remove:
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
• Gently peel back one corner of the Saniderm. If it feels sticky or pulls on the skin, you can use warm water to loosen the adhesive.
• Slowly and carefully peel it away from the tattoo, pulling parallel to the skin rather than upwards to avoid irritation.
• If you experience any discomfort, pause and add more warm water to help loosen the adhesive.
3. Initial Cleaning (After Bandage Removal)
• Wash Your Tattoo: Use mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Gently lather the soap over the tattoo, using your fingers (avoid washcloths or sponges).
• Rinse: Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel—do not rub.
• Moisturize: Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, non-comedogenic lotion or a specialized tattoo aftercare ointment.
4. Healing Time
• Initial Healing: Your tattoo will typically take 2-4 weeks to heal on the surface, but deeper layers may take longer. It’s normal for the tattoo to appear cloudy or shiny during this time.
• Scabbing: Some scabbing may occur; do not pick or scratch at the scabs as this can lead to scarring or color loss.
5. Ongoing Care (Weeks 1-4)
• Moisturization: Continue to apply a thin layer of lotion or ointment 2-3 times daily to keep the tattoo moisturized.
• Avoid Soaking: Refrain from soaking your tattoo in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks.
• Sun Protection: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. After it’s healed, use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect it from UV rays and fading.
6. Long-Term Care
• Hydration: Keep your skin hydrated by using moisturizer regularly.
• Sunscreen: Always apply sunscreen to your tattoo when exposed to sunlight, even after it has fully healed.
• Avoid Friction: Be mindful of clothing or accessories that may rub against your tattoo, which can cause fading or irritation.
• Regular Moisturizing: Incorporate a daily moisturizing routine to maintain skin elasticity and vibrancy of the tattoo.
7. What to Watch For
• Signs of Infection: Redness, swelling, increased pain, pus, or fever may indicate an infection. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional immediately.
• Healing Variations: Every tattoo and individual heals differently. If you have concerns about healing, consult your tattoo artist or a healthcare provider.
